Vista Links Golf Course
The area's only public golf course, this links style, 18 hole, par 72 championship golf course was designed by award-winning architect Rick Jacobson and is situated on 180 acres of rolling countryside. It offers panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. An outstanding practice facility, which includes a driving range, putting green, and chipping area, is also on site.
Really found the head pro Edward Armentrout to be a great guy. He is always friendly and helpful. The course is fun and reasonable. I just wish it were a little closer to the Charlottesville area where I live so I could play more often!
Played in late April 2007. Very good shape. Greens hard but not fast (hard to hold-break out the old balatas!). Tees and fairways very full. Divots not always repaired by patrons.
Course routing utilizes natural elevations and topography. Local knowledge would be very helpful for drives and approach shots. Pins can be tucked in nasty spots. Undulation make reading difficult. Par 3s tough to pick the right stick due to elevation changes and big/sloping greens.
Proshop/clubhouse is adequate and clean (good sandwiches!). Green fees very reasonable. Good practice range (real grass!).
Did not like: no pin placement sheets or coded flags to determine depth of holes (front, middle, back). Guess work was tough. Also, not enough sprinklerhead laser distances. Too much pacing off.
Golf staff very friendly and capable. Tournament set up was perfect and without complication.
Finally - views are just gorgeous. Mountain and valley beauty.
The Vista Links, in Buena Vista, Virginia, was official opened in August of 2004, so it is very young as far as golf courses go. It is an 18 hole, par 72, designed by Rick Jacobson. There are five tee boxes with yardage ranging from 4,941 to 6,925. The course has a traditional set up with 4 par threes, 4 par fives and 10 par fours. The prices are very, very reasonable and tee times aren't too hard to come by.
There are several bunkers to be aware of through out the course. Only one hole has a water hazzard, and that is the par 5 16th, which is 522 yards from the back tees. One of the most challenging holes is the par 3 13th. It's only 152 yards but with the elevation change, you feel as if you are standing right over the hole.
The most noticable thing about the Vista Links is the panoramic views of the blue ridge mountains. The clubhouse sits on the highest part of the property and from there you can see nearly 75% of the course. This is already a great course and will only get better with age. The location is wonderful, the course being located just 3 miles east of Interstate 81. If you are ever in the area, it would be well worth your time to check out this course.
The enmities weren't like a country club, but their is no claim that they are. However, the facilities were clean and the snack bar was OK. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.
The course was in great condition, and its layout is fantastic. The scenery made me wish for a little slow play, but it never happened.
Playing this course well will give you lots to brag about and a lot of good memories. ... but a few yards off line could also test your soul. If you love a beautiful challenging course, mark this one on your list as a must-play. The greens fees makes this course a steal.
