This picturesque underwater cave has been the site for scenes in major Hollywood productions including the James Bond movies "Thunderball" and "Never say Never," and Ron Howard's "Splash." Rays of light pierce the water through holes in the cave's ceiling to create a dazzling effect as the beams refract. You need not even be a diver to explore it;during low tide snorkellers can make their way into the cave. Inquire at your hotel about trips to the area just off Staniel Cay in the northern chain of Exumas.
I stopped at Staniel Cay on my way to the DR by boat. I had heard about the grotto previous to docking at Staniel Cay Yacht Club, but wasn't sure what to expect.
There are bouys to tie your dingy/tender to and is not very deep at that spot. Once the motor is off the fish start coming (they know). Your best bet is to bring a few sealed ziplock bags of bread, cranola, crushed up crackers. As soon as you open the bag, be prepared to be swarmed by tons of fish. Just make sure your goggles are not fogged and your snorkle is above water because it'll be a site to see!
Great spot for snorkeling all around this grotto, just make sure you don't bother the baraccuda who likes to hang out around there angry, he's not one to mess with (but overall just a curious guy). Anyone would love this spot. One word of advice, make sure you clear the small underpass during high tide before you look around so you don't bump your head.
Take a short ferry ride to the charming old fashioned settlement of Hope Town on Elbow Cay. This hamlet has
been home to about 300 people for generations. Bicycles rule the roads here, with motorized transport and modern facilities ...
