Red Bays, Fresh Creek

Red Bays is the only settlement on the western coast of Andros. It is situated on one of the few areas of land that could actually be used for a town. A combination of runaway slaves and Seminole Indians founded the village in the 18th century. The site of Red Bays is actually about nine miles north of the original hamlet. Today, the primary business for the few hundred residents is collecting sponges that wash up in droves on the coast. A day trip here comes highly recommended if you want to see a real working Bahamian town in action.
