Ernest Hemingway Museum, Alice Town

The Compleat Angler was a great local place to go! Just a short trek from the empty conch shell strewn marina, the Angler was flanked by ocean on either side. Enter through the screen door that slammed shut in a feeble attempt to award off mosquitos and hear the band playing as people cheer. To the right, the dark wood panelled room with musty old chairs, framed artifacts and Hemingway's hand written notes/sketches penciled as he crafted the Old Man and the Sea were amazing! Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the hotel and bar and all of Hemingway's memorabilia. Sadly, the owner perished in the fire January 13, 2006. The bands playing many variations of "Come back to Bimini" and the locals that would teach you how to hook the bar's brass ring "bahamian style" are memories I will never ever forget. I wish I could go back...

The Hemmingway Museum was a great display and I re-read "Islands in the Stream" after seeing the all of the cool stuff. The room was a ocmfortable place to hang out. However, I am saddened by the loss of not only the museum, but of Julian and the entire Angler.
