Description

A National Historic Landmark, this significant Georgian style home is one of only two residences in Maine with an unusual clerestory in the gambrel roof and is the only pre-Revolutionary home in the Greater Portland area that is open to the public. Features of this magnificent home include fine period furnishings, beautiful grounds, and an 18th century herb garden.

wow, amazing hearth fireplace. I'm not a history person, but this docent made it all come alive. Very unusual herbs from 18th century and facinating stories of how they were used. I'm going back for special garden events on Wednesdays. Way cool!

A Step Back In Time

A rare gem of authenticity. This is the real thing. Not only is the Tate House in a 1755 time warp, the gardens and view down to the Stroudwater river are not to be missed either. Some of the actual pieces of furniture from George and Mary Tates tenure in the home are still there and other pieces in the home are totally relevant to the time. Interesting tidbit: Mary Tate was "murdered" (shot) in the home, although her son William was convicted by a court of law he never was jailed and was pardoned by King George. Thourghly enjoyable tour, highly recomended.
