Maxie's Southern Comfort
Maxie's Southern Inspiration includes Low County cooking of the Carolinas, Creole and Cajun cooking of Louisiana, traditional slow-smoked southern BBQ, and southern comfort cooking of all kinds. We prominently feature a raw bar serving fresh oysters, clams and shrimp flown in 5 days a week from some of the best fish purveyors on the east coast.
A group of us went to Maxie's for dinner on a Saturday night. Because we got there at 5:30, we were able to enjoy Happy Hour deals including half off some appetizers and a dollar off drinks. The mojito was generous (in a pint glass) though not terrifically full of alcohol (which is ok with me). We loved the Fried Green Tomatoes with their remoulade. The Peel n Eat Shrimp was fine--one or two pieces were not perfectly fresh but it was all acceptable. I ordered the St. Louis Ribs, which were spicy and a tad dry but as leftovers were very good. The salad that accompanied, an arugula and corn with a creamy sweet dressing, was excellent. I also ordered side vegetables that were amazing--generously portioned and delicious. The corn bread was ok. My friend liked her pulled pork sandwich and my other friend liked her crab cakes but no one remarked that they were outstanding. We had a delicious Bourbon Pecan and Apple pie for dessert. Service was friendly and timely. Our server clearly knew her stuff. Not my BEST experience ever but I am taking my husband back tonight for our anniversary to have another go at it (and to get their side vegetables.. yum!)
Hello, I visited this resturant yesterday for the Fat Tuesday celebration, coming from background of Louisiana cuisine, I expected a lot of fun, exceptional food, and good drinks, and freindly southern hospitality. Sadly I found none of the above. The atmosphere wasn't inviting at all, not even remotely southern. It wasn't any of the staff in particular, so much as it was the general mood of them all. The food was cool not warm enough, the corn bread was cold, and the food was bland not at all like any new orleans food I have ever tasted, and was over priced. We had each two hurricanes, and two mint julips, an extra shot of bourbon, a beer, and didn't get a buzz. The place was full, but people were not having a good time, most of the crowd appeared to be antisocial. we hate that we wasted our FAT TUESDAY at that place, and we won't be back, and will not recommend it to others.
