Originally established as a residence for the Knapp family, this historic building traces its roots as far back as the 17th Century. The place was subsequently converted into a tavern to serve troops during wartime. The place was host to various luminaries of the American Revolution, and was later named after Israel Putnam, a renowned veteran. The house underwent numerous changes over the years, but was restored in 1976 to its former glory. Today, it houses a museum telling the story of the events that unfolded here.
Unfortunately, the house is only open on Sundays at certain times of the year, once in February for a reenactment and again in December for a candlelight tour. This is why, as a resident of Greenwich, it took me so long to see the inside. The extensive work to the house that was done in the 1970s is very authentic and the house is filled with period treasures. My daughter's favorite item in the house is the cannonball that was found on the property during the restoration. She also loved the story of General Putnam who ran out of the house with shaving cream on his face to get reinforcements from Stamford during the Revolutionary War.
