Cape May Stage
This performance oriented theatre company provides excellence in acting, directing and writing, and offers a variety of wonderful performances throughout its season. Performances run Wednesdays through Sundays at 8:00 p.m. at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse, on the corner of Bank & Lafayette Streets. This former church in the historic district of Cape May is a National Historic Landmark.
I went to see "Fully Committed" at the Cape May Stage a couple of weeks ago. I must admit that I'm sort of a theater snob, having been to many performances in NYC and at various places around the country. So, I had low expectations for the CMS. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The stage is small, but sufficient. The seating is nice. I did not feel cramped at all, and the stadium-style set-up ensures that everyone has a good view.
Word of caution: Many places around town offer a dinner-and-show package that seems to be a good deal, but you may be disappointed. I took the dinner-and-show deal at the Washington Inn, and while the service was great, the menu was VERY limited, and what was on there was bland fare. In the end, this "deal" ended up costing me about $70 because of the beverages, tax, tip, etc. If you do decide to do the dinner-and-show, be sure to phone the restaurant and ask them if the menu is a normal menu or a limited one. I would not do the dinner-and-show again unless the menu was not limited.
Superb! Our 1st visit was in 2006 for 'The Price.' CMS' dedication and commitment to excellence in both their hard work on the renovation and top flight performances is a joy to all of us lucky enough to visit and get to know this theatre. Do not miss a show when you are in town! It's seriously Broadway calibur and first-rate theater!
As a local resident, I can attest to the quality and range of the shows at Cape May Stage. They never fail to please or delight ...weather it is a drama or comedy the actors and the scripts are top notch! The current show is so funny my sides hurt from laughing so much. I try to see all the shows, alas, time won't allow it. But I highly recommend the summer show or the Christmas productions for a good chuckle. In the fall they put on a egrat dark "gothic" tale, and they do it well. The renovations are beautiful, the front garden was just done over with fountains and planters and it looks great. Well worth a visit.
Cape May Stage is nestled in the heart of the downtown historic district of Cape May so it's easy to walk to the theater. The quality of work performed at this theater is as good as (if not better!) than any other professional equity theater I have attended. Great intimate setting, friendly atmosphere, outstanding broadway-calibur work for the price! A must-attend event!"
