The Ultimate Graffiti
We made the mistake of seeing the Crazy Horse monument before going to Rushmore. Perhaps I would have found Mt. Rushmore more impressive had I not seen and experienced the powerful work being done at the Crazy Horse site. I came away with he feeling that the Rushmore carvings are a travesty. The ultimate graffiti, created solely as a tourist attraction in an effort to bring people with their wallets to that part of the Dakotas. And, indeed, that is the historic truth behind that project. The Crazy Horse Memorial, however, was begun at the invitation of the Native Americans so that "the white men will know that the red men have heroes, too." I do not believe the sculpture will be completed in my lifetime, but what has been done thus far is extraordinary and powerful. If you time your visit for one of two yearly "Lighting Ceremonies" you will not be disappointed. I cannot wait to return to explore again the Crazy Horse Visitor Center, and Museum. Rushmore is not on my list, however.
