Mount Rushmore

Description

The four figures carved in stone on Mount Rushmore represent the first 150 years of American history and the famous words of Gutzon Borgul, \"Until the wind and the rain alone shall wear them away,\" stand true today. The complex around this wonderful creation includes a parking structure, an amphitheater, a museum and theater complex, a visitor's center, a Presidential trail, dining facilities, a gift shop, and a book store. To complete your Rushmore experience, view the evening lighting ceremony.

A must see
If you are going here, you have to see this. Amazing feat. We got to meet a guy who actually worked on the mountain himself. He was the one who donated the plaque to identify the other dozens of guys, not just Gutsam Borglam or whoever he was. The one thing I found offensive was selling cheap Chinese made (made in China) stuff in a National Memorial gift shop. I know we don't make some of that stuff but little plastic mount rushmore's with made in China was very tacky and tasteless in an American National monument. And it was everywhere I turned. The presentation and the avenue of flags and the whole monument itself was top notch. Our government did an awesome job building the visitor center.

\"PEOPLE ON THE ROCKS\"
By ,
My family loved this place! It can be seen from the road but why when the whole car load can get to the monument and see it up close for only 20.00. No trip to the black hills is complete without a tour of mount rushmore. My daughter (2) called them the people on the rocks! Be sure to watch the 20 min video of the carving of mount rushmore...you will have a better appreciation for it! Do not miss the walking trail to the base....the views are spetacular! Also a sculptors studio at the end of the trail.

everyone should see it atleast once!
By ,
I have lived in the black hills now for 5 years. When I first saw Mt. Rushmore I thought it was breath taking. I take my kids back every year and still feel the same way. It is well worth the $8 yearly pass. Like any place take your own food or please dont complain about the cost and the quality. There are so many places to see in SD. It is a great place to visit!

The Ultimate Graffiti
By ,
We made the mistake of seeing the Crazy Horse monument before going to Rushmore. Perhaps I would have found Mt. Rushmore more impressive had I not seen and experienced the powerful work being done at the Crazy Horse site. I came away with he feeling that the Rushmore carvings are a travesty. The ultimate graffiti, created solely as a tourist attraction in an effort to bring people with their wallets to that part of the Dakotas. And, indeed, that is the historic truth behind that project. The Crazy Horse Memorial, however, was begun at the invitation of the Native Americans so that "the white men will know that the red men have heroes, too." I do not believe the sculpture will be completed in my lifetime, but what has been done thus far is extraordinary and powerful. If you time your visit for one of two yearly "Lighting Ceremonies" you will not be disappointed. I cannot wait to return to explore again the Crazy Horse Visitor Center, and Museum. Rushmore is not on my list, however.

Mount Rushmore was a Big Letdown.
By ,
I drove out from Rapid City and expected a big deal. Didn't happen. Took about 15 minutes to see EVERYTHING and take some pics just to show I was there. The heads are much smaller than you might think. Went to see the nearby Crazy Horse Memorial and that was much more worthwhile and informative.

Pleasant Surprise
By ,
My family and I loved the day at Rushmore. Rapid City itself has a lot to offer (civilization) and Rushmore had just the right amount of trails, exhibits, and a gift shop that actually didn't feel like we were getting taken advantage of (steer away from the buffalo burgers however, no pun intended). This was a nice, reasonably priced day with the family!

Childhood dream...
By ,
When I was about 8 yrs. old I had done an essay on Mount Rushmore and always dreamed of being able to see it in person. That dream came true for me at the age of 64 when I visited it. I actually had tears in my eyes when I first saw it and I've got beautiful photos to remind me that a dream did come true. Just with that it wasn't such a commericalized place now....just like what they have done to Stone Mountain, GA.

Once was enough
By ,
It was a disappointment, as the movies and pictures make it seem like it is a different atmosphere than it really is. The only good time to go is during the 4th of July, but it is absolutely crazy then, unless you have a VIP pass to park. Everything, like any tourist trap, is expensive. The trails are nice, but not long enough.
