South Street Brewery
Home of World Beer Cup gold medalist JP Ale, as well as other in-house brewed beers, this brewpub offers a wide variety of eclectic cuisine and live jazz music on Monday evenings. They are open Monday through Saturday for dinner and late night dining; closed on Sundays.
We visited South Street Brewery twice during a week long trip to Charlottesville. We enjoyed the food, beer and service on the first visit so returned a few days later. Part way through our meal a cockroach climbed up the bench behind my husband. The waitress came over when she saw us trying to kill it and apologized saying they'd had problems, sprayed, but clearly hadn't fixed it. I was no longer interested in finishing my meal which was only half eaten. Rather than offering to take it off the bill, the waitress offered to box it up for me. Very poor response to the situation. Good beers and food are ruined by bugs crawling on you during dinner.
The beers are usually average 6 or maybe 7 on a 10 scale. Food is fair -- yuppy type. Management is very fussy about filling growlers other than their own (puny 1 liter filled for 5 bucks -- most brewpubs average 7 dollars for TWO liters). Menu says (or used to say) "Don't even THINK about lighting your cigar here". Restroom stays filthy.
