Parque del Retiro
This park is known as the "lungs of Madrid," and few cities can boast such a large park in such a central location. There's a large boating lake and three art galleries (Casa de Vacas, Palacio de Cristal, and Palacio de Velázquez). On weekends and holidays, the park fills with madrileños (citizens of Madrid) and performers of all sorts, including mime artists and jugglers, painters, singers, puppet masters, and fortune-tellers. It was built as a royal park in the 17th century, and until 1868 it was the exclusive reserve of the aristocracy.

There are a number of attractions that shouldn't be missed..
The park is attractive and had some festive elements that my grandchildren really enjoyed, including some unique spinning awings, an elf riding a Christmas snail, and a huge cone of helium balloons.
Concession prices are a bit steep and there were a few shady characthers mixed in with the families and tourists at this time of year. Reasonable caution is called for, as in any large city.
Even so, a trip to Madrid would not be complete without a visit to this lovely park.
El Parque el Retiro is the best place for a Romantic walk, to sit down and think, to have a drink and tapa in any of the little bars inside, etc etc...It's a wonderful and beautiful place, don't miss it.
formal gardens place of tranquility in Madrid especially during the week. On weekends crowded with Madrid inhabitants but exciting with activities like puppet shows and boat rides. Has a little of everything. Clean and a great place when tired from touring and museums.
The park's facilities are extremely far apart, there are no bike rentals, there are no exit signs.
The good things are that you can rent a boat to go around in th lake and its quiet and as the name suggets there aren't alot of hooligans and vandals.
About four days into our stay in Madrid, we decided to have a picnic in the Parque del Buen Retiro. It was perfect! We stopped by Museo del Jamon and picked up sandwiches, fruit and beer, and headed to the park. It was the perfect way to relax. We took a nap on blankets under the trees near the boating lake. The peace and calm was sooo relaxing after four days of the great hustle and bustle of the rest of Madrid.
This is the perfect place to have a relaxing day without to go out of the city. You can rent a boat or visit the Chrystal Palace which remember a special cage of birds but now is an exhibition room for modern art. In the beginning of June the park becomes glamorous and welcome the Feria del libro where you can buy any book or meet a famous writer. Each season make it looks different but there is something that never change: its beauty. There are many kinds of trees and plants that become the place the lung of Madrid for that is one of the most visited places in the city.
Young families from Madrid love coming here to visit the six different adventure zones full of activities: Naturaleza (Nature), Maquinismo
