One of the main resorts on the island, SHANKLIN, with its auburn cliffs, Old Village and scenic Chine, has a marginally more sophisticated aura than Sandown, north across sandy Sandown Bay. The rose-clad, thatched Old Village may be syrupy, but the adjacent Shanklin Chine (daily: April to late May & mid-Sept to Oct 10am–5pm; late May to mid-Sept 10am–10pm; £3.75), a twisting pathway descending a mossy ravine and decorated on summer nights with fairy lights, is undeniably picturesque; local resident John Keats once drew inspiration from the environs.
