LOOE was drawing crowds as early as 1800, when the first "bathing-machines" were wheeled out, but the arrival of the railway in 1879 was what really packed its beaches. Though Looe now touts itself as something of a shark-fishing centre, most people come here for the sand, the handiest stretch being the beach in front of East Looe the busier half of the river-divided town. Away from the river mouth, you'll find a cleaner spot to swim a mile eastwards at Millendreath .
