PRAIA DA ROCHA was one of the first Algarve tourist developments and it's easy to see why. The beach is one of broadest of the entire coast, the wide expanse of sand framed by jagged sea cliffs and the walls of an old fort built in 1691. The Fortaleza da Santa Caterina once protected the mouth of the Rio Arade and its terrace offers splendid views at sunset. There's little that is traditionally Portuguese, of course, but it is lively enough to be fun at whatever time of year you visit.
