Moquegua, Peru

Located in a relatively narrow valley, the colonial town of Moquegua has winding streets, an attractive plaza and a lot of adobe houses roofed in thatch and clay. There's little in town, but the Plaza de Armas is picturesque with its ornate metal fountain designed in 1877 by Gustave Eiffel, and the grand ficus trees that fill the space. Close to the plaza, at the corner of calles Tacna and Ayacucho, the Catedral de Santo Domingo (Mon– Sat 7am– noon, 4-7pm) was restored after an earthquake in 1868 and now contains a large single nave, two finely worked retablos, and, in one of its towers, the first clock to arrive in Moquegua from London in 1798.
