Some 770km north of Lima, Chiclayo is the largest commercial centre in northern Peru thanks more to its strategic position for the export of produce like coffee and rice from the other side of the Andes than to any industrial development. The city has an incredibly busy feel to it, with people and traffic moving fast and noisily everywhere during daylight hours. Tourists tend to attract attention in the main streets, not least because they aren't seen very often.
