This is an excellent new addition to the island restaurant scene. The owner formerly cooked at the now-defunct Chelsea's, and was one of the good things about that place. Mallery Street Cafe is open for breakfast and lunch only. Breakfast is popular and quite good, serving all the usual breakfast items. They make great omlettes. Happily, they serve the breakfast menu at lunch too. They would make more money if they didn't close at 2 PM, which is a bit early in the summer months (c'mon, stay open for later lunch patrons till at least 3!).The lunch menu is interesting and varied. They have salads, a nice lobster bisque, crab cakes, salmon cooked on cedar plank garnished with a tomato compote and goat cheese, and really great po'boys and sandwiches. There is a good burger for the terminally unadventuraous. The fried oysters are lightly fried in a wonderful corn meal batter and were among the best I have tasted, showing off the chef's deft hand at frying. This is a come-as-you-are kind of place, but with food that is a big step up from the usual. Prices are fair, not cheap but not too high either. It's next to the local dry cleaner, behind Parker's convenience store, and across from J. Mac's. Ride your bike over for a good breakfast or a very civilized lunch.
