Sandwiched between sea and cliffs on the northern lip of Sandakan Bay, SANDAKAN isn't an appealing city, but does make a good base for day-trips to the Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre , wildlife-spotting river trips on the Sungei Kinabatangan , Turtle Islands Park , and the Gomantong Caves . Twelve kilometres from the centre (at batu 8) is a crocodile farm (RM2). Fifteen minutes' walk west of the dense downtown area along Jalan Leila are the blocks of shops that make up Bandar Ramai Ramai, while to the east, running up round the bay, is Jalan Buli Sim-Sim.
