Busy but still atmospheric, the town's walled medieval core is made from the yellow-grey stone panchino. Etruscan Volterra (Velathri) flourished through a combination of its alabaster mines and an impregnable position, attributes that ensured its survival through the Roman era and beyond. Its isolation was, however, its downfall. Under Florentine control from 1360, it proved unable to keep pace with changing and expanding patterns of trade, and the town itself began to subside, its walls and houses slipping away to the west over the Balze cliffs, which form a dramatic prospect from the Pisa road.

Nice clean airport, well organized and easy to navigate. Beautiful huge bronze horse sculpture right out side the arrivals gate. Will post photos later. Headed up to departures and now we're chillin in some western style bar with a cold beer (or a Grand Marnier on the rocks for Sheryl) that exactly like Hooters except for the busty barmaids. We took off from Minneapolis stopped in Atlanta and on to Milan, Italy. For November the weather was absolutely awesome. Day 1 (11/3) : We arrived in Milan around 7:30am got our rental car, set up the GPS and headed down to Genoa. We stopped in Levanto to get out and have lunch. We drove through the Italian National Park, Cirque Terre. Gorgeous drive to see the coast of the Mediteranian and some of the cities on the cliffs. From here we headed to Pisa.
