Five kilometres to the south of Bellano, VARENNA is arguably the nicest place on the lake. Shaded by pines and planes, and almost completely free of souvenir shops the village falls down steep narrow alleyways to the lakefront. If you are feeling energetic, you could haul up the hill to the Castello de Vezio , allegedly founded by the Lombard Queen Theodolinda, for some great views.
