At the northwest tip of the lake, RIVA DEL GARDA is the best known of the lake's resorts. It started attracting visitors in the late nineteenth century and retains some stylish pastel-painted hotels. Its old town is pleasant enough and Riva is also cheaper than most of the other lake resorts; coupled with the fact that it boasts Garda's only youth hostel the town makes a good base for a budget holiday.
