Had the man not been born here in 1182 the town wouldn't be thronged with visitors and pilgrims for ten months of the year, but then neither would it have the Basilica of St Francis, one of the greatest monuments to thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Italian art. You'll probably feel it's worth putting up with the crowds and increasingly overwhelming commercialism, but you may not want to hang around once you've seen all there is to see – something which can easily be done in a day.

We took two flights to get to Rome. The flights went quickly and were pleasant. We flew Alitalia from Boston to Italy. There were A LOT of bad reviews on this airline, so we decided not to check any luggage. The food was ok--beef stew and manicotti, the service was not quite what you get on American airlines. After the meal is served the staff will bring you one drink, but for the rest of the flight you have to walk to the back of the plane for water or juice. This isn't advertised well, and if you ask the flight attendants, they will point you in the right direction, but will not go out of th...

We flew from Boston to Munich and then onto Rome. We got into Rome in the early afternoon and at 4:30 we met Lino and signed up for some optional excursions. Then at around 6:00 that night we went on our "Rome By Night" dinner. We went to a nice restaurant and had a 4 or 5 course meal. We even had some entertainment, some opera singers. We then went to the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. There were so many people at the Trevi Fountain. I was lucky enough to get close to it to throw in a coin. When throwing coins into the Trevi Fountain there are meanings to how many you throw in at a tim...
