NÖRDLINGEN , together with 99 villages, lies in an enormous crater, known as the Ries , which was formed about 15 million years ago by a meteor which crashed to earth at a speed of about 100,000 kilometres per hour, and with a velocity 250,000 times that of the Hiroshima bomb. The initially transient crater spread to cover an almost circular area with a diameter of about 25km, in the process bringing a new type of rock, known as suevite, into existence.
