King Ludwig I called ASCHAFFENBURG , which is situated on the River Main at the extreme northwestern corner of the state, about 80km due west of Schweinfurt, his "Bavarian Nice". Although the town has lost some of its charm since those days, the characterful historic centre and pleasant parks make it an agreeable place to spend a day or two, and it's also the obvious jumping-off point for exploring the unspoiled highland countryside of the Odenwald to the south.
