Sixteen kilometres to the south of Pontigny on winding, rural D965, the pretty red-roofed village of CHABLIS is the home of the region's famous light dry white wines. It lies in the valley of the River Serein between the wide and mainly treeless upland wheat fields typical of this corner of Burgundy. While wandering around the village you could take a look at the side door of the church of St-Martin , decorated with ancient horseshoes and other bits of rustic ironwork left as ex votos by visiting pilgrims.
