In the town of SIRKKA, the posh ski resort of Levi attracts thousands of wintering Finns with its numerous downhill trails, several dozen lifts and gondola and ample après-ski attractions. Outside winter, there is relatively little going on here, though the surrounding hills boast seven hiking (or, in winter, cross-country skiing) routes, including the enjoyable river and fell walking of the eighteen-kilometre Levi Fell trail. All the routes begin in or near the centre of Sirkka, where you should find a whole range of places to stay – during summer expect to pay around 70 for a room, double that in winter – ask at the tourist board for information. From May to November, the cheapest place to stay is the Hullu Porohostel (Tel:016/651 0100), Rakkavarantie, which offers dorms for 20 and private rooms (Price: 26-50). For more information on outdoor activities around Sirkka, visit the tourist office (June– Aug Mon– Fri 9am–7pm, Sat & Sun 11am–5.30pm; Sept– May Mon– Fri 9am–4.30, Sat & Sun 11am–4pm; Tel:016/639 3300, Web:
