Draped across a series of tightly connected islands, SAVONLINNA is one of the most relaxed towns in Finland. Formerly sustained by its woodworking industries and position at a major junction on the Saimaa route, the town nowadays prospers on the income generated from tourism, and the cultural kudos derived from its annual international Opera Festival. It's packed to the gills throughout July (when the opera festival takes place) and early August, but on either side of the peak season the town's streets and numerous small beaches are uncluttered. The easygoing mood, enhanced by the slow glide of pleasure craft in and out of the harbour, makes Savonlinna a superb base for a two- or three-day stay, giving ample time to soak up the mellow atmosphere, discover the local sights and curiosities – such as a remarkable modern art centre and a huge nineteenth-century church – that lie within the town's idyllic surrounding.
