Nuweiba, Egypt

NUWEIBA is a resort on the Gulf of Aqaba, consisting of a port with nearby tourist complexes, followed 4km up the coast by Nuweiba"City", an administrative and commercial centre grafted onto a former Israeli moshav (co-operative village). During the late 1970s, thousands of Israeli and Western backpackers flocked here to party and sleep on the beach – a heyday remembered fondly by shop and campground owners. Today tourism is at a virtual standstill and much of the year the campgrounds lie dormant. For most travellers, Nuweiba serves primarily as a stepping stone for onward travel by bus to Eilat in Israel or by ferry to Aqaba in Jordan. Nuweiba's neighbouring Bedouin settlement is called TARABEEN, after the local Bedouin tribe, and tends to attract younger visitors.
