Ebeltoft, Denmark

EBELTOFT is the most popular destination, easily reached by regular bus from Århus, or by frequent ferry services from Odden in Zealand. A thriving market centre in medieval times, it was sacked by the invading Swedes in 1659 and has only emerged from economic decline thanks to tourism: try to arrive in early summer, before the cobbled streets are overrun by (mostly German) tourists shopping for souvenirs. Should you fancy staying in town, the best-value hotel is the small, no-frills Ebeltoft on Adelgade 44 (Tel:86 34 10 90; Price: Kr400-500), where rooms have shared facilities; or the Ebeltoft Park Hotel, on the beachfront at Vibæk Strandvej 4 (Tel:86 34 32 22, Web: www.ebeltoftparkhotel.dk ; Price: Kr650-900). There are several campsites along the bay, the best being Vibæk Camping (Tel:86 34 12 14, Web: www.publiccamp.dk/vibaek ), right on the beach a little way north of town.
