All means of access and facilities – including tour operators and outfitters – for the park reside in busy FORT SIMPSON (pop. 1000), a perfect base 150km to the east at the confluence of the Liard and Mackenzie, two of North America's greatest rivers. This spot has been inhabited for 9000 years by the Slavey peoples and their ancestors, making this the longest continually inhabited region in the NWT.
