Now incorporated within the City of Miramichi, the old shipbuilding centre of NEWCASTLE sits on the north bank of the Miramichi River as it nears the sea. Its compact centre is cheered by a pleasant little park at Ritchie Wharf and by the trim town square which, with its Italian gazebo and English garden seats, was spruced up at the whim of local-lad-made-good Max Aitken, otherwise Lord Beaverbrook, whose bust sits in the square too.
