Relying on timeless decor, gentle service, and inventive cuisine the Admiral serves delicious food without the restraints of convention. The menu changes daily to utilize seasonal flavors, locally produced foods, and new ideas. Reservations are strongly suggested, although bar seating is available on a first come first serve basis.
The Admiral is a gourmet restaurant in what looks a little like (and formerly was) a dive bar near the edge of West Asheville. My husband and I were in Asheville for 9 days and went to The Admiral based on recommendations of locals we know. We're both vegetarians, and The Admiral has one vegetarian dish on the menu, but we decided to take a chance. We went on a Monday night and had an arugula salad, mushroom ragout (the one vegetarian dish), and a side of brussel sprouts. The argula salad was incredibly good, the best I've ever had, the mushroom ragout was also delicious, and the brussel sprouts were perfectly cooked (so good that we asked how the chef makes them) and also delicious.
The meal was so good that we went back 3 days later and ordered the same dishes. This time the arugala salad was just average (about as good as I made it at home), the mushroom ragout was not particularly good, and the brussel sprouts were slightly undercooked and not particularly interesting.
We were curious why the difference, but we didn't ask. The first time we ate there, the meals was 5 stars. The second time, it was 3 stars. So, we've averaged it at 4 stars.
