Salzburg is located in the so-called Salzburger Becken (Salzburg Basin), on the northern border of the Alps, surrounded by the Kapuzinerberg (636m), the Mönchsberg (508m) and the Gaisberg (737m). Although there are official districts, not all of them are of interest when giving an overview of Salzburg. There are a few districts that have a distinct feel to them, but it is the city's historic Altstadt (Old Town) that deserves the most attention.

Old City

In 1997, Salzburg's Altstadt (Old Town) was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the category of cultural monuments worth preserving for future generations. This should speak for itself, and the Altstadt should be on every visitor's "to-do" list. Because the city center is not very big, you should be able to find your way around fairly easily. Classic Salzburg is a feast for the eyes, with impressive buildings dating back to the baroque period dominating the scenery. Different epochs can easily be distinguished from one another, with Italian baroque features standing side-by-side with examples of Austrian individualism. The Salzach River acts as a natural border to the Old Town, and the traffic-ridden Rudolfskai stretches out alongside it. Another natural feature that encloses the Old Town is the Mönchsberg , a big rock face that used to protect the city's treasures from unwanted guests during the Middle Ages.

Salzburg's cathedral is without a doubt the main attraction in the Altstadt . It is flanked by two squares, the Residenzplatz (a good place to see open-air concerts during summer) and the Kapitelplatz (also used for concerts and theater performances). The nearby Residenz, the "new" Residenz, the Franziskanerkirche (Franciscan church) and the Kollegienkirche (Stiftskirche) of Saint Ruprecht are only a stone's throw away from each other. Towering above all these attractions is the Hohensalzburg Fortress on the Mönchsberg (Monks' Mountain).

Getreidegasse

In the western part of the Old Town , you can admire the Kollegienkirche , Mozart's birth house , the two famous festival halls - Festspielhäuser - and the so-called "Pferdeschwemme" , once a spot where horses could get a drink of water. The Getreidegasse , one of the most expensive streets in Salzburg, is also situated here, with Church of St. Blasius at its western end. The Getreidegasse has always been the Linzergasse's elegant counterpart, though the latter lies on the other side of the Salzach River. It is one of the main traffic routes linking the districts on the right of the river to the city; heading west, it is also one of the main roads for those traveling to Linz and Vienna. The area around the Mirabell Palace is pure Austrian charm. The elegant palace, which is situated on the northern side of the river, has a beautiful park, which is elegantly landscaped in the style of bygone centuries. The square in front of the palace is best known for its market, the Schrannenmarkt . Farmers from all over the province meet here once a week to sell their high-quality produce. The small stalls around the Church of St. Andrä further ensure that the area has a lively feel about it.

North Side

The area to the north of Salzburg is mainly residential and the buildings are more modernized the nearer you get to the main train station. Head northwest and you will soon discover that the charming older buildings, such as those found in proximity to Mirabell Palace , are few and far between. The station itself is central to the city's infrastructure as the main means of connecting Salzburg to Austria's provincial regions, most of which can also be reached by bus.

Taxham

A big US-style shopping mall is situated in the Taxham district and is called Europark , the city's largest shopping-and-leisure center for a rainy afternoon. Nearby, you find Salzburg's soccer stadium, home to the local premier-league team, sponsored by Red Bull.

Aigen

The district of Aigen, in the southern part of town, is known as a rather a well-to-do area. Living there could cost you a small fortune, as real estate prices tend to be extremely high.

Hof bei Salzburg Eat & Drink Guide
provided by Wcities, Inc

Anyone who starts to explore Salzburg gastronomically will come across a host of cafes in the Altstadt (Old Town), good restaurants, and a number of beautiful beer gardens.

Cafes & Coffee Houses

There are only two places that fall into the category of coffee houses, but they are real classics. You can find the Cafe Tomaselli at the Alter Markt (Old Market) in the Altstadt . You can easily spend an afternoon here reading the latest newspapers (including the International Herald Tribune) and sipping your delicious Viennese coffee. In summer, you can sit outside on the balcony and enjoy the marvelous view of Altstadt. The Bazar , another traditional coffee house near the Salzach River and the Staatsbrücke, was a favorite haunt of writer Thomas Bernhard. It is still a favorite with intellectuals, artists and professors (mostly from the nearby Mozarteum Academy of Music), as well as employees from neighborhood banks and offices. The Cafe Fürst , which claims to have invented Mozartkugel (the world-famous chocolate candy), is also a good choice, but there are lots of cozy cafes to choose from in Altstadt.

Some of them have their own confectionery brands, one example being the Konditorei Schatz , which is located in a passage between the Universitätsplatz and the Getreidegasse . Outside the town center, in an area called Äußerer Stein, the Ratzka is very popular, not least because of its delicious pastries. Some cooking magazines claim it makes some of the best cakes in Austria. The Strasser is a good place munch on a gateau and spend a relaxing afternoon. On the other side of the Salzach River, you can choose between the Cafe Pamina , which is near the Mozartplatz , and the Cafe Stein , which is a must during the summer. Customers at this cafe enjoy an excellent view of the historic Altstadt on a clear day.

Beer Pubs & Beer Gardens

The most famous brewery in Salzburg is the "Stiegl Brauerei," which has its own museum , where visitors can learn about the art of beer brewing. The Stiegl beer cellar , where you can sample the beer, is situated near the Festung Hohensalzburg (Salzburg Fortress) and is always a good choice for a beer enthusiast. In summer, you can sit in the leafy Biergarten, from which you can observe the goings-on in the Old Town. The Müllner Bräu , which is also called Augustiner Bräu, is frequented by the Mülln area's locals. Its dining halls can accommodate up to 3000 people, and it has a beer garden with seats for up to 2000 people. If you are looking for something more intimate, then Die Weiße in the neighborhood of Andräviertel might be for you. As the beer garden here is not too big, though, it does tend to get rather overcrowded in the summer months, so you might want to try Raschhofers Rossbräu , which is situated in the Herrnau shopping center. Most of the beers here come from Upper Austria. Another option for those looking for a cozy pub is the Fidele Affe near Linzergasse .

Austrian & Regional Dishes

If you would like to try local food, you should check out Krimpelstätter , located in the Mülln district, next to the Müllner Bräu . Or you could try the Stiftskeller St. Peter . Although this is quite touristy, it is worth a visit, if only because it is located on the grounds of St. Peter's Monastery. The Kohlpeter restaurant in Liefering is fairly central but still has a countryside feel to it.

Other Culinary Discoveries

Salzburg also has a range of international restaurants, such as the Nagano , a Japanese restaurant on Getreidegasse that has the best sushi in town. Salzburg also has quite a few Chinese restaurants, such as Chinatown , in the Altstadt (Old Town). As far as Italian restaurants go, most of these offer the usual pizzas and pastas. Nonetheless, Pan e Vin in the Gstättengasse stands out in that it also offers modern Italian cuisine. If you like Turkish food, try Ossi Spezialitäten on Linzergasse . Late-night hunger pangs should vanish after a visit to the Steirische Weinstuben . The place is sometimes regarded as being a little bit sleazy, but the grilled chicken, which you can order until 2 in the morning, is legendary.
