There's recently been a bit of money spent on HALLS CREEK , 288km west of Fitzroy. The goldrush that begat the town in 1885 took place in the hills 17km south of town and in less than four years the thousand prospectors succeeded in exhausting the area's potential, before stampeding off to Kalgoorlie. Today new gold mines and diamond mines are opening up, even if touristically the town seems to be facing facts: it's just another stop on the highway.
