ANGLESEA is a pleasant place for a holiday, with the Anglesea River running through to the sea, and picnic grounds along its banks; its main claim to fame is a large population of kangaroos, which graze on the golf course. Despite tourist development, the beach has managed to retain its sand dunes and untouched aspect. Children can swim safely here, as the surf is fairly gentle, but the waves are high and powerful enough for body-surfers to enjoy. The small Anglesea Backpackers Hostel at 40 Noble St (Tel:03/5263 2664, Web: www.angleseabackpackers.com ; dorms $30, room Price: $76-100), located between the river and the golf course, has two six-bed dorms and an en-suite double. Internet access is also available. A great place to unwind is the friendly RivergumsB&B (Tel:03/5263 3066, Web: www.greatoceanroad.org/rivergums ; Price: $161-200) at 10 Bingley Parade, along the river. There are two self-contained apartments (one with private access to the Anglesea Hotel). The local's favourite café is Furios at 95 Great Ocean Rd, where they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner with an Italian slant seven days a week. Two companies organize surfing and kayaking lessons here.
