Some 50km north from Ingham lies the modest little town of CARDWELL – just a quiet string of shops on one side of the highway, with the sea on the other – though it's made attractive by the outline of Hinchinbrook Island, which hovers just offshore, so close that it almost seems to be part of the mainland.
