Probably the most exciting thing ever to happen in WHITE RIVER JUNCTION was the first use of laughing gas as an anesthetic, in 1844. The town has little to offer on its own, but it's an invaluable transportation hub: Amtrak trains stop right by North Main Street, and buses run east into New Hampshire Hanover is just across the river and throughout Vermont.
