Unless you stay in Volcano House or the park-service campgrounds, the village of VOLCANO offers the only accommodation in the vicinity of the park. Though it's just a mile or so east of the park entrance, towards Hilo, it would be easy to drive straight past it without realizing it's there. The main street runs parallel to the highway, on the mauka (uphill) side, but it's well hidden by a roadside fringe of trees. Along it you'll find nothing much of interest other than a small post office, a couple of general stores and the only gas station for miles. more »
