MAKAHA , or "savage," the last of the leeward towns, was once the hideout of a dreaded band of outlaws. Now famous for the savagery of its waves , it began to attract surfers in the early 1950s. Before World War II, virtually all Oahu surfing was concentrated in Waikiki. When changes in the ocean conditions there, and the development of new techniques and equipment led surfers to start looking elsewhere, Makaha was the first place they hit on.
