The neat, even prim air of the town of LA'IE , three miles on from Hau'ula, is explained once you realize that it was founded by Mormons in 1864, and remains dominated by the Latter-Day Saints to this day. This was the second major Mormon settlement in Hawaii; the first, on Lanai, was abandoned when church elders discovered that its President, William Gibson, had registered all its lands in his own name.
