KAHUKU , a couple of miles on from La'ie, may look run-down by comparison, but is considerably more atmospheric. Though the plantation it served went out of business in 1971, the rusting hulk of the Kahuku Sugar Mill still overshadows this small town. Assorted outbuildings now house a half-hearted shopping mall. Unidentified lumps of machinery are dotted around the courtyard, painted in peeling pastel blues and yellows.
