The main town on the North Shore stands at the point where Kamehameha Highway reaches the ocean, 24 miles north of Honolulu. For most visitors, HALE'IWA (pronounced " ha-lay-eve-a ") comes as a pleasant surprise. It's one of the very few communities on Oahu whose roots have not been obscured by a century of rebuilding and development, despite the fact that tourists have been coming here ever since the opening of a direct train line from Honolulu in 1899.
