Whichever road you follow, you have to drive a long way west of Honolulu before reaching open countryside. H-1, the main "interstate," curves past the airport and Pearl Harbor, while Hwy-78 sticks closer to the Ko'olau foothills, but they eventually crisscross each other to run through the nondescript communities of 'AIEA and PEARL CITY .
