I visited Souls for the first time last night 3/02/2010 - Two old friends escorted me to dinner. I haven't been in a Soul Food Restaurant in years, but upon first entering you are greeded by Two Servers, who are very well trained in Ma'am and Sir. Since this was my first time there, I was checking the place out. The decorator and Builder did an excellent job. It's not over done, but just nice. Love the chairs. There's a Parking Lot in the back and the entrance. It has a lot of space. Service was fast, courteous and professional.
I ordered Live & Onions, and the portions on the platters means you will not go away hungry. The food was delicious, just like home when I was a kid. Nothing under-cooked or over-cooked. We didn't have to wait that long for the food to reach the table - like any restaurant, you will have some waiting to do - but the food is well worth the wait.
I knew it it was owned and operated by Acts Full Gospel C.O.G.I.C. in East Oakland. It is a Christian establishment and the brand new space is absolutely beautiful, featuring Art of African-American legends and Gospel Music.
I under stand the Restaurant is open 6-days a week, featuring Breakfast, Lunch & dinner. Breakfast starts at (7:00am). From what I can remember, the menu features Live & Onions, Yams, Greens, Green Beans, Red Beans, Fried Chicken, Meatloaf, rice & gravy, and daily specials, such as Turkey Wings and Dressing, Ox Tails and BBQ -
I plan on taking a few friends to visit - it is truly a beautiful Restaurant and I encourage everyone to try it at least once and judge for yourself.
