These are old reviews apparently. Just went there with friends this evening and had a good time. The service was impeccable--our server was super nice and patient with us. Food was really top notch and came out on time. My salmon was cooked perfectly--usually restaurants overcook but not here. Drinks were amazing. Perfectly mixed. The crowd was very diverse--all ages from young to old. I have to say the gender balance was off (3rd floor bar) skewed in favor of men. But it was fun ppl watching. Very classy on the first floor. Nice venue. Overall highly rec d!! I thought for the quality of food and drinks it was spot on.
I am a former customer of this establishment, but I will never go there again. Yesterday, some out of town friends and I were standing on the PUBLIC SIDEWALK outside the restaurant wearing goofy animal masks, and a staff person came out within 20 seconds to ask us to leave. We were not bothering anyone, or even trying to attract attention. We were not drunk. We were standing on the public sidewalk. I did not even see any diner complain (and can't believe they would have had time to). Ironically, the reason we were standing in front of the restaurant was that I was telling my friends how nice it was. The person who asked us to leave said that their diners deserved to enjoy their meal in peace and acted angry, like we had done something terribly wrong. We were so embarrassed and taken aback that we just left, but I realized later that they have absolutely no right to tell people to vacate a public sidewalk. This is the first time I have felt ashamed of my town. I couldn't believe they would treat people this way. If they want to have a dress code inside the restaurant, that's the management's prerogative (and there is a dress code, by the way), but they don't have the right to hassle people on the public street.
If you go anyway, which is understandable given all the hype surrounding this place, don't bother with the restaurant (good food but overpriced, hard to get a table with a view of the band, and the service is lacking). Just head for the W20 bar on the top floor for the great view and nice ambiance.
My husband and I, along with another couple had a great timeon our first visit to the Watermark! The bartender had a great pour, he made some of our classic favorites and new surprises. We tried the oysters and enjoyed them very much and we plan on coming back for dinner. The owner chatted with us for awhile and made our first visit very delightful. The only problem was the great Jazz band had us dancing for hours and my feet hurt the next morning!
I went there for the first time last Friday night with a small group of people and was pleasantly surprised! GREAT ambuance and lay-out. The dance floor was too small and the band could have been better, however overall it was a really fun evening and I am looking forward to returning soon! We did not dine so can't comment on the food.
Forget going to the watermark if you're mexican or black. The head bartender and the owner will be more than happy to let you know that you are not welcome. The red and white (look it up in wiki) has stepped it up a notch in Ventura. So sad.
I was an international banker for 27 years and have had thousands of meals in thousands of restaurants all over the world, and I say the service at the Watermark IS THE WORST I'VE HAD ANYWHERE, ANYTIME EVER. It ruined a very special birthday party. I was so angry I wrote the owner a letter in detail outling what a disaster the dinner was. I will ask a computer expert how I print the letter in its entirety here. It was hard to tell how the food was because by the time it arrived (about a half hour late) it was so overcooked as to be tasteless.
The restoration of the building really is great and it is worth seeing. Go in, have a drink, look around and leave.
