I love this place because it's not just CHinese food. In the back is sushi, but often overlooked are the mongolian barbeque and delicious pho soup that can be made just for you right next to the sushi bar. Additionally, there are delicious korean noodles on the main bars. Most of the complaints in terms of food are about the chinese food but in my opinion, you can get those things anywhere. It's perfectly possible to go there and eat only the delicious, quasi-unique things.
My daughter and I found Red City while we were visiting from the west coast. We loved it. Interesting buffet food, good quality, cute waitstaff, quiet and clean. If you have ever been to Moonstar in SF, this is as good. It's in an ugly shopping center, very out-of-place. Nothing else we tried in VB was even close. Thank you Red City!
I was pleased with this restaurant when I recently went there for a late lunch. It was after 3 and we were charged for a lunch buffet. The problem was while we were sitting there, my friend and I went back up to the buffet and they had crabs so I chose one and we went back to our table. We were sitting there for about 15 minutes when a waitress walked up and said the crabs were for dinner and I would have to pay the extra for dinner or give the crab back. There were no signs to indicate these items were for dinner or no signs that the menu had changed to dinner. The waitress took the crab right off of my plate, I can only hope she did not put it back out for another diner to grab. I will never go there again, that was completely rude and humiliating.
My daughter and I went for dinner on a Wednesday around 6:30PM. I thought due to the time and because they were rated Silver in the Best Chinese catagory in the Best of Virginia Beach 2009 paper, they would be really crowded. They were very empty in the restaurant and it should have been an indicator that we should leave. We sat down and ordered our drinks, I asked for water with lemons on the side and the waitress told us to help ourselves at the buffet. Half of the offerings at the buffet are seafood. If you like seafood, then this may be for you. Seafood is not our favorite and so there was limited variety of Chinese dishes. There were no spring rolls or sesame chicken, and the General Tao's chicken did taste odd. When I got back to the table with my plate, I had a glass of water but no lemons at all. All of my food was COLD. Even the teriyaki chicken skewers that were replenished in front of me were cold. I guess the heating mechanisms under the trays were not working well. The fried shrimp was dirty, the intestine veins were still inside and not cleaned out before cooked. We tried to eat the food but just couldn't manage it. We got up after a maximum of 10 minutes and went to the counter to pay. The waitress did not check on us once (may not have had time) and we didn't get a bill. The hostess told us it was $30.00. I was shocked to know that it was $15 per person. She explained it was $13.99 plus the drinks. So she charged me for my water and the Diet Pepsi my daughter had. Normally restaurants don't charge for water. I later realized it was so high in price due to the expensive seafood (which we didn't eat anyway). The hostess asked us why we were finished so soon and I told her about all the problems. She did not offer to knock anything off the price since we didn't even finish what we took. I guess I should have asked for the manager, but I didn't. Please be careful when going to this restaurant. I will NEVER go back - it was awful. I would like to give them no star rating but the website wouldn't let me.
DON'T GET THERE AFTER 8PM!! They don't replenish anything after 8 unless you ask them too which I should NOT have to do. There were 5 different pans that were almost completely empty containing one piece. There was a pan FULL of clam shells that had NO clams inside of ANY of them. I have been there before at an earlier hour and it was great but don't be LATE!!!
I went there for the first time a few months ago and hoped for it to be good. but the food wasnt to my likings. I think I only liked a few items. And yes it isnt that fresh. I expected easy easy easy jello to be atleast one thing good when I was about to leave but that also was hard and tasted old. I was very dissapointed.
Worst Chinese buffet in Virginia Beach, strangely enough, the Red City Buffet in Newport News is awesome!!! Must have something to do with ownership. Who knows? In Virginia Beac, the food is not very fresh and the General Tao is totally off. Also, the drinking glasses were not clean and that is a just nasty.
Red City buffet is by far the best buffet in virginia beach. i dont think any other buffet within a 20 mile radius even compares to this place. It's a buffet, you go in, you eat and u come out satisfied. the people there were very friendly. i've eaten at the red city in newport news and the one in williamsburg and they all are great. unlike other places that i have been too the food is always FRESH!! that's the key when eating at buffets. the price is very attractive as well. go check them out and i promise you won't be disappointed and u definetly won't leave hungry.
