The second time my family and I ate here was for a personal celebration. Once seated we had to get our own silverware, napkins, ect. After we ordered food not only was our entire order WRONG but the waitress proceeded to get an attitude with us and tell us we were lying and that we had ordered exactly wha she'd written down. the only order she did get right was my sisters, and all she got was Chicken tenders. Seriously. I wouldn't recommend anyone to this place. Its a embarassment to our town.
As Assistant Manager of Mater's Restaurant I would first like to say that we are under new management and working very hard to improve. We have a new staff and have hosted many of the countie's events with ease. Some of our new specials include the Colby-Jack burger for $7.99, BBQ Ribs & Shrimp Combo for only $17.99, and we recently created a Crab Claw platter which includes a half-pound of gulf-fresh claws and two sides for only $19.99. For those who are watching the wallet, you can't get a better deal within 100 miles. I encourage you to give Mater's restaurant a chance. My name is Anna Hicks. I have been an employee for two years. Give us a chance. I guarantee your dining meal to be a pleasurable experience or it's on us.
I have eaten here 3 times and will never return. They have fish on the menu but never seem to have it aval and the only sides they have are a cheap looking side salad and fried sides. The service was not good at all. We felt like we were forgotten. I will go eat fast food before I waste another $60 for poor food and service. I do not like this place simply from experience. The owner should be ashamed!!!
I visited this restaurant on (01/15/2009) for lunch. The waiting staff was very friendly and most helpful when I asked about specials. The gumbo was very tasty. I also had the Crab cake as an appetizer, although I prefer crab cakes to be pan seared the fried version from Maters was very meaty and tasteful. I would order them again. My entrée was called the Crescent City which was a filet of grouper with grilled shrimp and a rémoulade sauce on top and a side of garlic mashed potatoes . It was very tasty and would order it again. Overall this restaurant is very good. Jackson Alabama should be proud to have big city taste in their own back yard.
I had lunch at Mater's last Friday (December 19, 2008) as part of Washington County Hospital's luncheon for its directors. I was appalled at the incredibly poor service we received. This was a pre-scheduled event, and all food orders were pre-ordered, yet I had to wait for more than an hour to receive my lunch, which was a chicken salad wrap: no cooking! The injury was that I was the very last of about 20 to be served, and the insult was that the same thing happened to me the last time we had a directors' luncheon at Mater's, a few months ago. Once is bad enough, but twice is inexcusable. Actually, this is Mater's third strike as far as I'm concerned. My wife and I had our anniversary dinner there in June, and it was awful: horrible service, terrible steak, and way, way overpriced. That meal cost me $56.00 for two--we could have gone to Outback, had much better food and service and would have paid only $35.00! Without a doubt, Mater's is my worst dining experience, and I will never eat again at Mater's, whether my company pays for it or not.
I've eaten at this restraunt a couple of times and most of the time it was good however it took too long to get our meal. Our server was the best though. I've ordered the gumbo more than once and it was good the first time but the other times it smelled like bad seafood. Overall the food is tasty. The steaks are great. I would eat there again but just wouldn't order the gumbo and if it looks busy and i was real hungry i would choose somewhere else to eat for fear of not getting our food for a long time.
I visited this place over the weekend. It was the cutest little restaurant I have ever seen. From the first warm greeting at door to the decor in the lobby, I knew it was the right place to go. We ordered their signature FRIED GREEN MATER's for an appetizer. It was great. I didn't even use the dipping sauce. For my meal, I had the gumbo and a side of the Crab cakes. Scrumptious! The gumbo was very hearty, the roux could have been a little spicier but it was still good. The crab cakes were huge. They were covered in a interesting cream sauce that I can't pronounce. They were excellent. I want to say that they were 89% crab meat. Overall, I give them a thumbs up. I am from Los Angeles and believe me, I know good restaurants. This was some good eating.
