Church of Veracruz
Description
Many national heroes are interred in the Church of Veracruz, leading to this edifice's second common name, the National Pantheon. Two historical artworks with cultural significance are housed inside. The Christ of the Dying is a crucifix that was prayed to before the execution of prisoners, and the Christ of the Martyr is a large painting that was carried to the scaffold along with prisoners to be hanged. Recently remodeled with neoclassical decorations, the church has an altar of silver plate, and a stone facade. The exterior walls are stark and simple white.
