Lake Guatavita (also known as Laguna de Guatavita or Guatavita Lagoon) is a lake formed within a meteor crater that is the reputed source of the legends of El Dorado. Once considered sacred to the Muscita, the lake is about an hour drive from Bogota. Many travel agencies in Bogota offer affordable day trip packages combining a tour of the lagoon with the nearby Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira, a Roman Catholic church built in underground tunnels. Highly recommended for nature lovers, those interested in stunning views, and those interested in Colombian history and mythology. It's chilly there, so bring a warm coat or jacket.
