one fortune stick

one fortune stick is what we made the journey to wong tai sin temple, in hong kong for. The journey was easy via mtr, the underground system, reaching wong tai sin district, the police had put in crowd control measures as it was the third day of the lunar new year, an important time for the local chinese to visit the temple and ask for good luck to take them through the rest of the year. Atmosphere was as befits a chinese temple, incense sticks held high, crowds, not pushing but lining into the temple meant you had to watch your step and steady your heart. Now was the time to say what you wanted, be it a wish, a prayer to Wong Tai Sin himself. Due to the sheer number of people visiting, I couldn't make it into the actual temple to visit the shrine myself, so had to make a wish and shake the cannister containing the fortune sticks in the outside courtyard. Eventually one stick fell out and we took it to our choice of local soothsayers who line the promenade of small shops/stalls and had my fortune told or translated from archaic chinese scriptures. Make an honest wish and get an honest reply, it was worthwhile especially as it was at the start of a new year.
