Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple

Description

Probably the most well-known and busiest temple in the city, Wong Tai Sin was built in 1973 on the site of a previous temple dating back to 1921. The current temple is an excellent example of a traditional Chinese temple. Wong Tai Sin himself was a shepherd boy from Zhejiang province in China, who was thought to have mystical healing powers. Most people visiting the temple come to assess their fortune by using fortune sticks, and there are even some English-speaking soothsayers who can help visitors interpret the fortune sticks.

Cool place, just not good enough to describe
By ,
I hate this place, well it's okay, but you don't say the address, or any other short nice detail on it! The real place inside is good, and i think you could make the piece longer.

The temple is quite busy . Try & get to see some of the rituals performed there There are rows of soothsayers around.A few of them do speak english. If interested in monuments & architecture well this may be a bit modern

Easy to get to
By ,
It was interesting to see all the people there worshiping becuause it is a temple in the middle of Kowloon, but it wasn't to exciting and spectacular after going to the big buddha and other temples in mainland china. I would recomend it to those who don't have a chance to go to some of the bigger ones in Asia. It shows the culture very effectivly. I walked through it and took some pics in about 10 min.

one fortune stick
By ,
one fortune stick is what we made the journey to wong tai sin temple, in hong kong for. The journey was easy via mtr, the underground system, reaching wong tai sin district, the police had put in crowd control measures as it was the third day of the lunar new year, an important time for the local chinese to visit the temple and ask for good luck to take them through the rest of the year. Atmosphere was as befits a chinese temple, incense sticks held high, crowds, not pushing but lining into the temple meant you had to watch your step and steady your heart. Now was the time to say what you wanted, be it a wish, a prayer to Wong Tai Sin himself. Due to the sheer number of people visiting, I couldn't make it into the actual temple to visit the shrine myself, so had to make a wish and shake the cannister containing the fortune sticks in the outside courtyard. Eventually one stick fell out and we took it to our choice of local soothsayers who line the promenade of small shops/stalls and had my fortune told or translated from archaic chinese scriptures. Make an honest wish and get an honest reply, it was worthwhile especially as it was at the start of a new year.
